Thanks to the 1,500 members who participated in the virtual championship. Over 5,500 races were completed, which totaled more than 1,800 miles! If you missed the action on social media, you can check out the Instagram highlights! Or, you can read about a few of the inspiring stories.
We miss events. We miss the butterflies in our stomach. We miss challenging ourselves. We miss having a date on the calendar and a goal in our head. To help us get back what we're all missing, USMS has partnered with Swim.com to create the 2020 Toyota USMS Virtual Championships. This will be a unique, socially distant pool and open water championship event that allows you to race anyone across the country in your favorite events on the Swim.com app. Times can be submitted manually or via a smartwatch.
All USMS members are invited to compete in this first-ever event. Net proceeds from the 2020 Toyota USMS Virtual Championships benefit the USMS COVID-19 Relief Program in support of restarting local club operations nationwide when safe and appropriate.
See where you stack up in your favorite event. Get out of your comfort zone and try something new. Are you up for the challenge?
NOTE: You must link your My USMS account with your Swim.com account in order to compete. Make sure to download the most recent update for the Swim.com app on your phone.
When
Aug. 12-31, 2020 (due to popular demand the end date has been extended from the 23!). This is the timeframe that Summer Nationals and two open water national championships would’ve been held.
Where
Any 25-yard pool or open water venue.
*If you do not have access to a 25-yard pool, you can use one of the time conversion tools (SwimSwam, Swimming World) to convert your time to 25-yards and manually input them.
Who
All current USMS members are welcome to compete in the virtual championships!
Entries
There are two options to enter the virtual championships.
Option 1: Free option for USMS members to join on the Swim.com app.
Option 2: Get awesome SWAG (see the list below) and help USMS clubs restart (net proceeds benefitting the USMS COVID-19 Relief Program) for an entry fee of just $20.20.
What Events Are Offered?
All standard 25-yard pool individual events and several open water distances. No relays will be offered. Click the links below on your phone to go right to the event on the Swim.com app to join.
- Freestyle: 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000, 1650
- Butterfly: 50, 100, 200
- Backstroke: 50, 100, 200
- Breaststroke: 50, 100, 200
- Individual medley: 100, 200, 400
- Open water: 1 mile, 2 miles, 5K, 10K, 10 miles, 25K
How Do I Compete?
You must link your My USMS account with your Swim.com account in order to compete.
You can choose to compete in as many of the events as you’d like on the Swim.com app. There is no limit as long as you swim them between Aug. 12 and Aug. 31 (extended from Aug. 23) and log the results by Sept. 2. Swimmers can upload swims using a compatible device (Garmin, Apple Watch, etc.), or they can be manually uploaded, so don’t worry if you don’t have a smartwatch! Manual results can be timed by a coach or friend with a stopwatch, regular watch, pace clock, or anything else that displays times. :)
USMS starts and strokes rules apply, but we will be using the honor system. Swim fast. Swim fair. USMS reserves the right to remove any clearly incorrect results.
Results and Rankings
This is not a customary USMS national championship. Results will not be eligible for USMS records or used to determine Top 10, All-American, or All-Star status.
Fundraising
Additional donations to the USMS COVID-19 Relief Program for clubs can be made during registration or through this page. We are also hosting an auction with special swimming items to help fundraising efforts for the relief program. We appreciate the support!
SWAG
NOTE: We reached our first 1,000 paid (Option 2) participants on August 17. Everyone who registers after August 17, will receive a package in the mail by early October as we had to reorder the SWAG items. Here is what we are sending:
- Commemorative medal
- Event logo swim cap
- USMS window cling
- 50th-anniversary sticker
Note: the cap is latex. Please email events@usmastersswimming.org if you do not wish to receive these items. After we reach 1,000 paid participants, we will have to reorder the SWAG and it will take longer to receive.

In case you missed it, you can catch the Golden Road Brewing Happy Hour with Ashley Twichell, Jeff Commings, Elizabeth Beisel, and Josh Davis over on our Facebook and Youtube!
